After Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar is the latest from the 1983 World Cup-winning team to offer support to Vinod Kambli who has been going through a tough time in his personal life. The former India batter, who played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India, has recently been in the news after a public appearance last week in Mumbai left ex-cricketers and fans equally concerned about Kambli’s health.
At the former coach Ramakant Achrekar’s memorial ceremony in Mumbai, Kambli was seen on the stage and also shared a heart-warming moment with Sachin Tendulkar but the former’s body looked frail, and in one of the videos where he can be heard singing a song, his speech is also incoherent.
His close friend Marcus Couto, a former first-class umpire, recently revealed that Kambli is fighting “multiple health issues,” while Balwinder Singh Sandhu, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, told the Times of India that Kapil Dev is willing to help Kambli but on the condition that he has to take the first step.
“Kapil (Dev, captain of the 1983 team) has told me clearly that if he wants to go to rehab, then we are willing to help him financially,” said Sandhu. “However, he has to check into rehab himself first. Only if he does that, we are ready to foot the bill, irrespective of how long the treatment lasts.”

More ShortsNow, Gavaskar has said that the 1983 World Cup-winning team wants to take care of Kambli and help him “get back to his feet”.
“The 1983 team is very conscious of the younger players. For me, they are like grandsons. If you see their age, some are like sons. We are all very concerned, particularly when fortunes desert them,” Gavaskar told Sports Today. “I don’t like the word help. What the 83 team wants to do is take care of him. We want to take care of Vinod Kambli and help him get back on his feet. How we will do, we’ll see in the future. We want to take care of cricketers who are struggling when fortunes don’t smile on them.”
Overall, Kambli scored 3561 runs in 121 international matches. He smashed six hundreds with the highest score of 227 in Tests and 106 in ODIs.
