PM Modi had spoken to India head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli following India’s seven-run win over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final on Saturday.

This is India’s first T20 World Cup title win since 2007, the only other time the Men in Blue had won the showpiece event. This was also India’s first ICC trophy win since their Champions Trophy triumph in 2013 , when they had beaten England in the final under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

India had won the toss in the final against South Africa and opted to bat first. Although the Men in Blue were off to a worrying start as they were reduced to 35/3, Virat Kohli (76) and Axar Patel (47) stitched a 72-run stand for the fourth wicket to guide India to 176/7. In reply, despite gritty fightbacks from Heinrich Klaasen (52), Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31), some fine death bowling from Hardik Pandya (3/20), Jasprit Bumrah (2/20) and Arshdeep Singh (2/18) eventually helped India edge the Proteas and clinch the title.

Suryakumar Yadav’s stunning catch to dismiss David Miller off Hardik Pandya’s ball in the final over of the run chase changed the complexion of the game and set the tone for India’s win. Hardik defended 16 runs in the final over, giving away just eight runs.
