PM Modi congratulates Team India over phone after T20 World Cup win, lauds Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli

Over the phone, PM Modi congratulated Rohit Sharma for his ‘splendid captaincy’ and appreciated his T20 career. He also lauded Virat Kohli for his innings in the final as well as his contribution to Indian cricket.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to the Indian cricket team on the phone from India and congratulated the entire team on their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. India won the World Cup by beating South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling final at Barbados.

This is India’s second T20 World Cup win after the 2007 triumph under MS Dhoni and also the first ICC title in 11 years.

Over the phone, PM Modi congratulated Rohit Sharma for his “splendid captaincy” and appreciated his T20 career. He also lauded Virat Kohli for his innings in the final as well as his contribution to Indian cricket.

PM Modi appreciated Hardik Patel for his final over and Suryakumar Yadav for his catch. He also talked highly of Jaspreet Bumrah’s contribution.

The PM also thanked Rahul Dravid for his contribution to Indian cricket.

Rohit and Kohli announced after the World Cup victory that they will be retiring from T20Is, while it was Dravid’s last match as India coach. He is set to step down with his tenure coming to an end.

PM Modi also uploaded a video on his X account after India’s win in which he congratulated the team for making 140 crore countrymen proud.

“Congratulations to India for this magnificent win. Today, 140 crore countrymen are proud of your fantastic performance. You won the World Cup and also the hearts of crores of Indians. You didn’t lose even one match; that’s not a small feat. You have achieved a spectacular victory. I congratulate you,” the PM said in Hindi.
