Though the glittering trophy ultimately slipped out of their grasp thanks to the cameo of a lifetime from Ravindra Jadeja, who helped Chennai Super Kings (CSK) win the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) final to clinch their fifth title, runners-up Gujarat Titans (GT) can take solace from the fact that they collected most of the awards, including the Purple Cap. GT bowlers, after all, finished in the top three spots at the end of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League, with pacer Mohammed Shami collecting the award after finishing with 28 wickets to his name. Fellow senior Indian pacer Mohit Sharma (27) pipped Afghan spin sensation Rashid Khan (27) to the second spot with a haul of 3/36 in the summit clash at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium during which he dismissed CSK captain MS Dhoni for a golden duck and nearly bowled GT to a second title on the trot. Though both Mohit and Rashid were tied on 27 wickets each, the former had both the better economy and average. The fourth spot on the wicket-takers’ list goes to another senior Indian bowler, Mumbai Indians leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who collected 22 wickets in 16 outings while Rajasthan Royals’ Yuzvendra Chahal finished fifth with 21.
