Sunil Gavaskar has hit out at the “Gamball” moniker for Team India’s aggressive batting strategy under captain Rohit Sharma. The Gamball moniker in many ways credits new head coach Gautam Gambhir for the aggressive batting strategy of the Indian cricket team. It became popular after India won the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh by making a team record for scoring the fastest 50,100, 150, 200, and 250 in a match . Over two days in Kanpur was lost due to rain, but Rohit and Co’s explosive batting helped India register a 2-0 series sweep with a seven-wicket over Bangladesh in the second Test at Kanpur.
‘Foot-licking of the highest quality’
As Gamball trends all over the internet, Gavaskar has written that crediting Gambhir for India’s fiery batting is nothing but “foot-licking” as the opener himself did not bat in this fashion and the credit should go to captain Rohit who has led the batting revolution in Team India by example.
Rohit has indeed been following the aggressive batting strategy for a while as he sees it as the best option to achieve important results. He batted similarly in the 2023 ODI World Cup and later guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup with a similar approach.
“While one paper called the Indian batting “Bossball” because the captain or “boss” of the team, Rohit, had shown the way, some from the old powers referred to it as “Gamball” after the Indian coach, Gautam Gambhir. While the England batting approach changed completely under the new regime of Ben Stokes and McCullum, we have seen over the last couple of years that Rohit has been batting like this and encouraging his team to do so as well,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.
“Gambhir has only been coaching for a couple of months, so attributing this approach to him is foot-licking of the highest quality. Gambhir himself hardly ever batted in this fashion like McCullum used to do. If any credit is due, it is solely to Rohit and nobody else,” he added.

Gavaskar added that India’s explosive batting strategy under Rohit’s captaincy should be called “Gohit”.
“Instead of using the words this-ball or that-ball, I would suggest using the skipper’s first name, Rohit, and term it the “Gohit” approach. Hopefully, brainier people will come up with a trendier name for this rather than the lazy option of calling it after “Bazball”,” the legendary batter wrote.
