Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes there is a dearth of talent in the Pakistan cricket team and said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) need to assess the situation in order to nurture match-winners. Pakistan’s latest setback came after the Shan Masood-led side lost a two-match Test series against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi .

Their 2-0 series win over Pakistan was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test series victory over their Asian neighbours. In the aftermath of that series defeat, Pakistan slipped to eighth place in the ICC Test rankings.

The Men in Green have had an underwhelming run across two ICC tournaments in the last year. Pakistan suffered a league stage exit at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, and also failed to surpass group stage during the T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA this year. Pakistan suffered a shock loss to USA, as well as a six-run defeat to India at the T20 World Cup.

The Babar Azam-led side clinched wins over Canada and Ireland, but those were not enough to qualify for the Super 8.

“I see a genuine dearth of talent in the country. Every time we think of Pakistan, we remember Miandad, Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, and Younis Khan,” Ganguly told news agency PTI.

“That’s the memory of Pakistan for us, but that doesn’t win matches in the modern generation of cricket. Every generation has to produce outstanding players to win, and when I look at Pakistan in world cricket – I saw them in the West Indies World Cup, in India during the World Cup, and now after the Bangladesh series loss – there is a dearth of talent in that country,” he added.

The Prince of Kolkata stated that it was up to PCB to make their players great once again. “The people connected with the sport in Pakistan will have to look into it. I’m not saying this with disrespect. Pakistan of the old had some great cricketers, which I don’t see in this squad,” commented the 52 year-old.
