India batter Shubman Gill could play in Punjab’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka, according to a report in The Indian Express. Gill endured a disappointing outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against Australia recently, scoring just 93 runs from five innings.
Gill had missed the first Test in Perth due to a thumb injury and was dropped from the playing XI for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne due to tactical reasons. Gill endured scores of 31, 28, 1, 20 and 13 in the Tests against Australia.
According to another report, in Hindustan Times, Gill is in fact available for Punjab’s match against Karnataka. “Yes, Shubman Gill is available for Punjab’s Ranji match against Karnataka on January 23,” a Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) source was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
Punjab’s Elite Group C match against Karnataka will be played from 23 January. Gill last played a Ranji Trophy match for Punjab in June 2022 during a quarter-final match against Madhya Pradesh in Alur. He endured scores of nine and 19 in his two innings of the match, which Madhya Pradesh won by 10 wickets.
Gill has hardly played red-ball domestic matches in the last four years. Gill did play one Duleep Trophy game for India A in September 2024, where he scored 25 and 21 runs in both innings.
