Shubman Gill has been a completely different player since his century at Visakhapatnam against England which allowed him to leave behind his poor form. In the ongoing fifth Test in Dharamsala, Gill seemed determined to dictate terms and after hitting his stride on the opening day, he was in no mood to stop. He started the day by stepping out while facing James Anderson and belting him over the mid-off region for a magnificent six. This set the tone perfectly as commentators Sanjay Manjrekar and Harsha Bhogle were discussing the sentiments of the Indian batter’s father.

Lakhwinder Singh, sitting in the stands of the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, was watching his son’s dominant display with the bat as he sent the England team on a leather hunt. Gill powered on in the second session and raced to his ton with a sweep over square leg off Shoaib Bashir. Pulling off his inimitable celebration style, the youngster took off his cap and bowed to accept the cheers of the crowd. This time, however, Lakhwinder’s face was full of pride.

Lakhwinder is well-known now for his strict discipline while coaching young cricketers. Gill was initially trained by his father and had shared in past how his father would pass on extremely tough feedback every time the young cricketer faltered to capitalize on a promising start.

Reflecting on his experience of being named Player of the Series in 2022 against Zimbabwe, Gill had disclosed the firm admonitions he received from his father for gifting his wicket when he was set in the second match.

Gill along with Team India skipper Rohit Sharma added 171 runs for the second wicket. English captain Ben Stokes got rid of Rohit for 103 while James Anderson dismissed Gill for 110. Gill’s terrific knock comprised 12 boundaries and five sixes.
