Just try and focus on what the team needs me to do. One ball at a time. If you back your own decision, it’s the best way to go forward.

Rohit Sharma: It’s good that we have qualified for playoffs. We have played consistent cricket and have results for it. Runs on the board are always in a crucial game. We knew we had bowlers to put pressure on their batters. Manish batted really well. Played some great cricketing shots. Bumrah keeps improving. He delivers every time he gets the opportunity. He held his nerve in the Super Over.

Super over is about small margins. Pandey committed the cardinal sin of gifting a wicket first ball in the powerplay. From there, the Sunrisers were always behind in the contest and despite a six in the over from Nabi Mumbai closed it easily in the end. A great game of cricket still and eventually a win for Mumbai’s attritional style in the field where they try to commit fewer mistakes and wait for the batsmen to make their own. Kind of Dhoni like approach with the ball. The win ensures a playoff berth for the team. Sunrisers live to fight another day with calculators in hand and prayers for other results to go their way on their lips.

Kane Williamson: Fantastic effort to get so close from Manish Pandey and the lower order. It was a good effort from bowling department as well to keep MI batsmen quiet. It was a pretty good first half but we couldn’t get over the line. Rashid is world class and we thought he was our man. When it gets down to the last ball, it’s a shame. But there is a game left.

Manish Pandey, you gem. Never lost his composure even as he was running out of partners. Took whatever he could against Bumrah. Waited for the weak link in the last over. Before that he single handedly kept the chase afloat through the middle overs. Almost a Dhoni like affort this from this stylish middle order batsman from Karnataka. It’s super over time now. Bumrah is just so hard to get away in these situations. Like a number of other bowlers this season, he is using the short pitch deliveries well to keep the batsmen guessing. With a lot of pitches offering variable bounce this season, bowling it hard into the pitch is an option that is exploited well by the bowlers.

You wouldn’t associate T20 with attritional play but Mumbai Indians are a master at picking wickets just by piling and sustaining the pressure. The spinners were keeping Pandey and Shankar on a leash. With the required rate climbing, they were waiting for a mistake from the batsmen and Shankar played into their hands when he mistimed his attempted lofted drive over long on. Mumbai will be feeling confident of closing this given they are now into the misfiring SRH middle order. Pandey is the only hope for the orange army now.

Malinga returns to the attack. Good work by Krunal at deep cover saves a couple of runs for the hosts. Malinga then keeps it tight for the next four deliveries, with just three runs coming off it, before Pandey brings up his half-century with a boundary straight down the ground. Nine off the over. Four runs and a wicket off the over. SRH need 57 to win off 30 balls.

Single collected off each of the last two balls, as Krunal signs off with excellent figures of 2/22. The required rate goes above the 10-an-over mark for the first time in the innings. OUT! Shankar departs, the pressure to get boundaries more often getting the better of him in the end .Lofts the ball down the ground, but doesn’t get the distance. Pollard ends up collecting it rather easily at long on. SRH 98/4

Rahul signs off with figures of 0/21 from four overs, conceding four singles off his final over of the match. This has been a slow partnership so far, but Pandey and Shankar are laying the foundation for a late assault. Just have to get the occasional boundary to keep the required rate under check. This is poised nicely at around the mid way mark. Mumbai are just starting to find ways to keep Pandey quiet who along with Shankar is looking to stay busy and keep up with the chase. Once again, the two remaining overs of Bumrah will be the key from here.

Pandey continues to collect the odd boundary on offer while rotating the strike with singles, as seven runs are collected off Krunal’s third over. SRH need 70 to win off 48 balls.

FOUR! The boundaries are helping Sunrisers bring the required rate down and ease off some of the pressure. Pandey goes for the inside-out loft towards deep extra cover, collecting his fifth boundary in the process. SRH 91/3

Williamson hasn’t been in great form this IPL, but his wicket still carry huge value for the opposition. SRH needed his calming presence in the middle to see them through in this chase. Brilliant review from Krunal and Rohit.

The appeal was initially turned down by the umpire, and it was de Kock who showed a lot of excitement, giving Rohit enough confidence to go for the review. And it paid off, as MI net the SRH skipper. Bumrah is really feeling it today. His reaction when he got the first wicket showed that he is pumped. Guptill was looking to stay busy in his brief stay at the crease but Bumrah’s in dipper was just too good for him on the day. Who is going to put up his hand for Mumbai and support Bumrah is the question now coz they are leaking runs in the field.

Timely strike for Mumbai as Saha goes back after a well compiled 25. Hyderabad are going at 10 an over in the first four overs without looking to take too many risks. Just shows how good this pitch is. Were Mumbai batsmen too conservative in their approach earlier in the evening?

Rohit turns to Bumrah in the fourth over in order to get a breakthrough, and the star pacer starts off on a rough note by conceding a boundary to Saha off the first delivery. Single off the next two deliveries, followed by a dot. Saha collects another boundary, this time off the penultimate delivery, but is caught at backward point by Lewis to depart for 25. 10 runs and a wicket off the over.

OUT! Saha’s flourishing start comes to an end, as he holes out to Lewis at backward point. Bumrah gets the breakthrough that Mumbai were looking for. SRH 40/1

Lasith Malinga has taken 13 wickets against SRH in IPL – the joint third most by any player. (8 matches, 16.61 average)

Guptill and Saha are already rotating the strike much better than the Mumbai batsmen which means the occasional boundary would keep then on track with the run rate. This is not a huge total they are chasing, they will be happy with wickets in hands at the end of the powerplay even if they don’t get off to a flier.

Sran continues from the other end. Guptill sets off for a single at the start of the over. Saha then slashes the ball through backward point to collect his second boundary, and gets a third one when he muscles a slightly shorter one from Sran over mid on. Guptill lofts the ball over long off for a maximum off the last delivery. Big over for Hyderabad, as Sran leaks 17 off it.

Malinga bowls from the other end. Saha sets off for a single after a couple of dots at the start of the over. Guptill collects his first boundary, albeit a streaky one, off the fourth ball, and gets an edge off the fifth that nearly results in a catch for the man at short third man. Six off the over.

Both Saha and Guptill get off the mark in the first over of SRH’s chase, the former doing so with a square drive that fetches him a boundary off the very first delivery of the innings. Seven conceded by Sran off his first over.

FOUR! What a way for Saha to get both himself as well as the visitors off the mark, steering the full delivery from Sran behind point for a boundary! SRH 4/0

SRH’s RR of of 9.3 in PP overs (1-6) this season – the best among all the teams.

Wriddhi Saha walks out to open the SRH innings, and accompanying him to the crease is Kiwi opener Martin Guptill, David Warner’s replacement. Barinder Sran to start off with the ball for the home team.

Mumbai end with 162. A fighting total, albeit not a match winning one. The innings promised much more right from the start but they kept losing wickets at wrong times and never managed to find that extra gear. Williamson’s sharp captaincy deserves much credit for it as he shuffled around his bowlers meticulously and made sure he held back the correct bowlers for particular matchups. De Kock carried his bat through the innings but despite being set scored only around 40 percent of the total runs. His struggle to get away from strike summarized the Mumbai batting in this game and throughout the season in general. Their batsmen have been guilty of playing too many dot balls between the big hits and that has cost them a game or two.

Mumbai Indians haven’t been allowed to get away in these death overs. The Hyderabad bowlers have varied the pace and length well to keep the power hitters in the Mumbai lower order mostly under check.

SRH have averted the Hardik threat tonight.Credit to Bhuvi. Bowled short and cramped him for room as he sliced it to long off fielder from the top of his bat. Meanwhile, some good fielding from Shankar and Guptill allowed SRH save two fours. Seven off the over and Pollard is in the middle.

Hardik Pandya got up and running without wasting any time. Rashid Khan is one of the rare bowlers in the IPL he treats with respect, but allowing him to get away with just 4 runs an over in the fifteenth was taking that respect too far. De Kock should have been the one to go after Rashid, and even if he had perished in the effort, Mumbai would have sent a big hitter to replace him. In the end, the pressure of playing out Rashid got to Hardik who tried to go after a well-directed bouncer from Bhuvi. Not for the first time on this Wankhede wicket, we see a batsman getting hurried into playing the horizontal bat shot against a bowler prepared to bend his back.

Surya fails to convert another good start this season. He went after Khaleel at the start of the twelfth over, and it looked like Mumbai are pressing the pedal but Surya’s departure may peg them back for a couple of overs. It wasn’t a special delivery from Khaleel, but Surya just drove it right down the throat of deep cover. Surya was replaced by Evin Lewis which might surprise a few given the form Hardik Pandya is in. Suryakumar Yadav has looked in good touch right from the start. De Kock has struggled to rotate the strike especially against the spinners and despite getting some boundaries away he is struggling to score at a run a ball. Nabi has been handy during this period. Williamson is looking to hold back Rashid Khan’s over for the big hitters down the order. If a wicket falls at this stage, it will be interesting to see who comes in next for Mumbai.

Mumbai squanders a solid start in the last over of the powerplay. The pitch looks full of runs and Rohit was looking in ominous form. But the pressure created by Rashid Khan in the fifth over where he bowled five dot balls probably forced Rohit to overcompensate in the next over from Khaleel but got one to bounce extra on him and ended up skying a catch. This is what you get with Wankhede. If you are prepared to bend your back as a fast bowler then you can surprise a few batsmen.

Mumbai are back home for their last two games of the league stage. They are number 3 on the table now with 14 points. A healthy run rate should take them through to the playoff from here, but more importantly, they still have a chance of finishing in the top two if they win these last two games. Sunrisers are at the fourth spot on the points table, and a win here would almost certainly secure a playoff berth for them given the fact that they have the healthiest net run rate in the league at the moment. Mumbai has offered some of the best pitches this season with something in it for everyone. If Rohit wins the toss he would be looking to bat first and allow his strong bowling line up to defend anything they put on the board.

“When you look at the pitch, you think bounce and pace. Nabi’s the guy that stays as the overseas bowler. Guptill has to play so well to get runs (for SRH),” says Kevin Pietersen in the pitch report.
