Marcus Stoinis has revealed he knew a while ago that he would not be getting a Cricket Australia contract even though he’s part of the national team setup and a crucial member going into the T20 World Cup. The Aussie scored a stunning century , his first in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and second in T20 cricket, for Lucknow Super Giants against Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday.
Stoinis had missed out on a central contract for 2024-25 in March and had been tight lipped on the development since. He is still under contract for the 2023-24 period, which runs until 30 June. Barring injury, he is a definite inclusion into Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup even before his record innings in Chennai. He has been a handy member in Australia’s T20I side as part of a settled middle-order alongside Glenn Maxwell, Tim David and Matthew Wade.
Following his ton, Stoinis was asked in the post-match presentation whether he had a point to prove.
“I’ve got a great relationship with the [Australia] coach [Andrew McDonald],” Stoinis said. “Me not getting a contract, I knew that a while ago. I think it is great to give younger kids a crack and let them take my spot. I’m absolutely fine with that on the contract list. But on the playing front, obviously want to make sure that I’m there and that’s also why it’s so lucky for us and for me particularly to have this competition [the IPL], that’s why I love it so much.”
Stoinis has remained consistent in his desire to play for Australia even if it comes at the cost of not holding a contract. The 34-year-old said in January he understood why he had been left out of Australia’s ODI squad to face West Indies. He has reportedly been in constant communication with McDonald and chairman of selectors George Bailey about his future post the T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.
As Australia build towards the future - the 2025 Champions Trophy, the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup - Stoinis is not a definite inclusion.
