Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah ’s availability for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been a topic of discussion for fans and experts alike for the past few weeks. Bumrah, who is India’s frontline bowler, has been suffering from an injury that he sustained during the Sydney Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The injury has caused Bumrah to take a breather from the game and consult doctors at the National Cricket Academy, who will eventually decide if he can play in the forthcoming ICC event.
Bumrah’s participation to be confirmed soon?
According to ESPNcricinfo, the decision on Bumrah’s participation in the Champions Trophy will be taken by the BCCI on 11 February, the last day for submission of the final squads to the ICC. Bumrah has already submitted his scans to the medical staff at the NCA in Bengaluru and they will take the final decision following discussions with the Indian team management. Bumrah is part of the 15-member squad that the BCCI has announced for the Champions Trophy.
Meanwhile, another report suggests that the BCCI will keep Bumrah in the Champions Trophy squad even if there is a one percent chance of his recovery. If Bumrah doesn’t regain fitness in time, the BCCI might approach the tournament’s technical committee midway to seek a replacement.
“Even if there is a 1% chance, the BCCI is likely to wait. They did the same with Hardik Pandya as they waited for close to two weeks before getting Prasidh Krishna as a replacement. Even when Shubman Gill was down with dengue, they didn’t have any thoughts of looking for a replacement. Yes, those two incidents happened during the campaign but the approach with Bumrah could well be no different. This is just the deadline to submit the squad and they could approach the Event Technical Committee at a later stage to seek a replacement if he fails to regain fitness,” the Times of India reported.
If media reports are to be believed, Harshit Rana is being looked at as Bumrah’s potential replacement. Rana is part of the ongoing ODI series between India and England, where he gaining crucial match experience. It will be interesting to see how the Bumrah issue pans out once the results of his scans are revealed. India are scheduled to play their first game of the Champions Trophy against Bangladesh on 20 February.
