In what comes as a significant blow to the Indian cricket team ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy, pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been reportedly advised bed rest at home until his swelling in his back subsides. According to a report in the Times of India, Bumrah has been asked to report to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, although there is no fixed date regarding his check-in yet. Bumrah returned to India after the hectic tour of Australia last week.
Future course of action on Bumrah after swelling in his back reduces
The future course of action will be taken only once the swelling on his back reduces, the report has added. “Bumrah could go to the CoE next week but right now there is no fixed date yet. He has been advised bed rest at home to help the muscles recover and the swelling to subside. Once that is done, future course of action will be ascertained,” a source was quoted as saying by Times of India.
“Bed rest doesn’t sound good. I hope it’s not a disc bulge or a muscle swelling which is of a higher grade. The approach has to be similar with him – wrap him in cotton wool and preserve the talent like him,” the source added.
When Jasprit Bunmrah sustained back spasm
Bumrah had sustained a back spasm on Day two of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney earlier in January. He then consulted his personal doctor in New Zealand , who had operated his back in 2023. The latest development adds to the uncertainty surrounding Bumrah’s readiness for the 2025 Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to begin on 19 February.
India will open their campaign against Bangladesh on 20 February in Dubai. Sources had told Firstpost recently that Bumrah is likely to miss India's group stage matches in the Champions Trophy .
Former strength and conditioning coach Ramji Srinivasan, however, said that the possible timeframe of Bumrah’s return will only be made clear after a comprehensive diagnosis. “Swelling happens if there is a tear because of edema formation – which depends on the grade of tear in the muscle. If it’s a disc bulge or swelling then recovery also depends on grade, individual capacity, medical intervention and post medical rehab work,” he told the newspaper.
India and Pakistan are the only teams yet to announce their squads for the Champions Trophy and BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said that the meeting to announce the squad could be held on 18 or 19 January. “The meeting will happen on 18 or 19 January,” he said.
