India pacer Jasprit Bumrah could reportedly be rested for a major part of the limited-overs series against England at home as he continues to recover from back spasm he sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. According to a report in news agency PTI, the seriousness of Bumrah’s injury is yet to be known but it’s serious enough for him to stay out of action for a while.
Bumrah took 32 wickets from five Tests against Australia Down Under and bowled a total of 151.2 overs. He sustained the injury on Day 2 of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney last week. Bumrah ended as the leading wicket-taker of the Test series against Australia.
How much recovery time will Bumrah need?
The report adds that the Gujarat cricketer will need two to three weeks to recover if the 30-year-old has sustained a Grade 1 injury. If what Bumrah has sustained is a Grade 2 injury, he could take six weeks to recover and if it’s a Grade 3 injury, Bumrah will be out of action for three months and will have to undergo rehabilitation programmes.
It was, however, almost clear that Bumrah would skip the T20I series against England given that this is not a World Cup year. However, Bumrah would have played at least two of the three ODIs against England.
A report in Sports Tak says that Bumrah will soon be consulting his personal doctor, who performed his surgery in New Zealand. The exact nature of his injury and his current status are expected to be revealed in a few days.
“What he has to do and what suggestions he has to take this is all between BCCI doctors and his doctor who had operated on him in New Zealand, you will know in some days the exact nature of the injury and status….everything depends on him personally… He is in touch with doctors and he will be assessed further to know the exact injury and level, if he requires rest, he will be given there is no doubt about it but before that, we need to know his exact injury then only doctors will decide the next step call will be taken accordingly, as of now We can only hope and wish that he recovers soon,” the source told Sports Tak.
The final decision regarding Bumrah’s future and rehabilitation will rest solely with the doctors.
Bumrah’s heroics in Australia
As a result of his injury, Bumrah only bowled 10 overs in Australia's first innings in Sydney, finishing with figures of 2/33. He did not bowl at all in the second innings of the match that India lost by six wickets. Australia clinched the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series with a 3-1 margin following their victory in Sydney, marking this the first time in 10 years that India surrendered the trophy.
A lot of Team India seniors, including skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, failed to step up but youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy showed promise.
