Back in an IPL final for the first time since winning it in the inaugural edition in 2008, Rajasthan Royals have finally turned into a side that is unwilling to settle for just the also-ran tag — as was the case over the last decade. Having the orange and purple cap holders — Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal respectively — among their ranks gave them the match winners they dearly missed in earlier editions and expectedly turn decisive on their road to final as they await Gujarat Titans for the title showdown at Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium on Sunday evening.
Chahal, however, has lost some sheen with no wickets during the play-off stages but Buttler regained his touch in the hour of need with a century in the Qualifier 2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore to seal the final date with Gujarat Titans. The momentum that came with the one-sided win was exactly what the doctor ordered after the way the pink-clad outfit conceded the Qualifier 1 to Gujarat Titans; setting up a mouth-watering final with both the sides at peak of their abilities. Prior to the playoffs, the Royals had a decent run in the campaign as they won 9 matches out of the 14 that they played and also took the second spot in the points table on the basis of a better NRR than LSG. After having a dominant start, RR lost momentum in the middle stage after they suffered three defeats (MI, KKR, DC) in a span of for four games but made a solid return to form to conclude the league stage with two wins on the trot against LSG and CSK respectively, and eventually attained the second position in the points table. RR will now lock horns with Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday in Kolkata.
