The Harmanpreet Kaur-led India women’s cricket team will aim to collect their second win of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup when they face Sri Lanka in a Group A contest in Dubai on Wednesday.
The Women in Blue had begun their T20 World Cup campaign on a horrendous note following a 58-run loss to New Zealand , before getting the better of arch-rivals Pakistan by six wickets in their second match . A win will certainly keep their semi-final hopes alive, whereas a loss could all but draw curtains on their campaign.
The win against Pakistan meant India were in fourth place in the five-team Group A with two points, but with a negative Net Run Rate of -1.217. India will need to beat both Sri Lanka and Australia (13 October) by big margins to remain on course for the semi-finals. Batting and fielding are departments where India will seek improvement during their match against Sri Lanka.
The opening pair of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana have not been at their explosive best and it is imperative that the two get going in a bid to take India to a big total if they bat first.
After going wicketless in the first match, Deepti Sharma claimed the wicket of Sidra Amin and finished with figures of 1/24. Against Pakistan, Arundhati Reddy was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 3/19.
The last time these two sides in a competitive match was in July this year during the Women’s Asia Cup T20 tournament final in Dambulla. Sri Lanka had defeated India by eight wickets to clinch their maiden women’s Asia Cup title.
