The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team had been bundled out for a modest 119 after Pakistan captain Babar Azam opted to field under overcast conditions at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York on Sunday.
Rishabh Pant scored a third of those runs with a 31-ball 42 while Axar Patel (20) and Rohit (13) were the only other Indian batters to have scores in double digits as the Men in Blue lost their last seven wickets for just 30 runs.
As it happened | India vs Pakistan, T20 World Cup 2024, Group A match in New York
Pakistan appeared set for a second victory over India in three T20 World Cup meetings after reaching 73/2 at one stage with opener Mohammad Rizwan fairly set at the crease and the equally experienced Fakhar Zaman for company.
The Indians, however, refused to lose hope despite the odds being stacked against them, and began to believe in their chances once again after Fakhar and Rizwan were dismissed in quick succession, the latter getting castled by Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah proved to be the difference between the two teams with his sensational spell of 3/14, having dismissed opposition captain Babar earlier in the innings and later accounting for the wicket of Iftikhar Ahmed off his final delivery of the day.
Things would only go downhill for the Pakistanis after Rizwan’s dismissal as the boundaries began to dry up and the required rate rate began to climb at an alarming rate. And despite Naseem Shah making things somewhat interesting in the final over by hitting Arshdeep Singh for back-to-back fours, the Men in Green would end up falling short of the modest target.
T20 World Cup scenarios | Have India qualified for Super 8? Are Pakistan eliminated?
There were quite a few records broken and milestones achieved during the marquee clash at the ‘Big Apple’ which we take a look at in greater detail below:
— India’s total of 119 is their fourth-lowest at the T20 World Cup. Their lowest total at ICC’s flagship T20 event remains 79 against New Zealand in Nagpur.
— It was also the first time Pakistan had bowled India out in the shortest format.
— This is India’s lowest total ever defended in T20Is. It’s also the joint-lowest target successfully defended at the T20 World Cup.
— The victory helped India stretch their overall T20 World Cup record against Pakistan to 7-1, winning each of their last two outings against their arch-rivals.
— This is the second time in as many World Cup meetings between India and Pakistan in which Jasprit Bumrah has been adjudged the Player of the Match. He had previously won the award for his figures of 2/19 in last year’s ODI World Cup clash in Ahmedabad.
