When South Africa chased down 163 at Wankhede
South Africa are the only side to have chased down a target more than 100 runs in a Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. This was during the first Test between India and South Africa that took place between 24 and 26 February, 2000. It was the first Test of a two-match series. India had won the toss and opted to bat first.
Skipper Sachin Tendulkar top-scored with 97 runs whereas Ajit Agarkar remained unbeaten on 41 runs, as India were all out for 225 in their first innings. South Africa were restricted to 176 in their first innings reply, courtesy a three-fer each from Javagal Srinath and Sachin Tendulkar. Anil Kumble and Murali Karthik took two wickets each.
Gary Kirsten (50) and Herschelle Gibbs (47) had forged a 90-run stand for the opening wicket, but the Proteas soon lost the plot as they were dismissed for a meagre total. India enjoyed a 49-run lead going into the second innings, but were all out for 113, which meant South Africa needed 163 runs to win. Kirsten (20) and Gibbs (46) forged 51 runs for the first wicket in South Africa’s run chase on Day three of the Test.
