Team India were on the receiving end of things during the recently-concluded three-match Test series against New Zealand after they were outplayed in all departments. India suffered a rare Test series defeat at home, their first in 12 years, and in the third Test in Mumbai, things turned from bad to worse following a 25-run loss .
India were looking to chase a target of 147 on Day three of the third Test in Mumbai on Sunday, but the hosts were undone by the visitors’ spinners led by Ajaz Patel (6/57) and Glenn Phillips (3/42). Rishabh Pant (64) fought a lone battle without the support of his partners at the other end, and India were dismissed for a paltry 121 n 29.1 overs. New Zealand thus registered a historic 3-0 win over India in India, something that no other team had achieved before.
Scenarios | Can India reach ICC WTC final after losing third Test against New Zealand in Mumbai?
Having said that, quite a few records were broken during the course of the third India-New Zealand Test at the Maximum City. Let’s take a look:
—India suffered their first-ever 3-0 Test series whitewash at home when New Zealand won the third Test on Sunday. The only other time India were clean swept by a team in a home Test series was when South Africa won a two-match Test series 2-0 in 2000.
—Sunday was only the fourth instance where India failed to chase down a target below 200 runs (147) in a Test match. India were set a target of 120 against West Indies in Barbados in 1997, but were bowled out for 81. India had also failed to chase 176 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2015, and 194 against England in Edgbaston six years ago.
—The total of 147 is also the second-lowest target that New Zealand have successfully defended in Tests. New Zealand had defended 137 against England during a Test in Wellington in 1978.
