India have handed England a crushing 142-run defeat in the third ODI of their three-match series in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. This is India’s second-biggest victory against England in ODIs. With this victory, India have secured the contest 3-0, which will give the side a huge boost ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

England were off to a solid start once again in the series thanks to their openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett. However, once the openers were sent back by Arshdeep Singh, England suffered another collapse as they were bowled out for just 214 runs. Tom Banton, Joe Root, and Harry Brook attempted to provide some stability but Indian bowlers were too good for this English side. Gus Atkinson scored a quickfire 38 runs towards the backend of England’s innings but in vain.

Arshdeep, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Harshit Rana picked up two wickets each for India, while Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav took one each. Shubman Gill was named the Player of the Match for his seventh ODI century.

Earlier in the game, India posted a mammoth 356/10 in their allotted 50 overs. Shubman Gill’s classy century (112 off 102) led the charge, while Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul provided crucial contributions to help India set an imposing total.

After losing Rohit Sharma (1) early, Gill and Kohli built a solid foundation with a 116-run stand for the second wicket. Gill was in sublime touch, reaching his seventh ODI century off 95 balls, hammering 14 boundaries and three sixes. Kohli, on the other hand, played a steady knock before falling to Adil Rashid for 52 off 55 balls. This is the 11th time Rashid dismissed Kohli across formats.

With Gill and Kohli departing, Shreyas Iyer kept the momentum going, smashing 78 off 64. His aggressive stroke play, coupled with KL Rahul’s 40 off 29 balls, ensured that India didn’t lose steam in the middle overs.

England’s bowling unit found it tough to contain India’s batting firepower. Adil Rashid (4/64) was the pick of the bowlers, dismissing key batters including Gill, Kohli, and Iyer. Mark Wood (2/45) and Saqib Mahmood (1/68) provided some resistance, but the lack of support from others allowed India to breach the 350-run mark.
