Uday Saharan-led India U19 cricket team begin their U19 World Cup defence with a game against Bangladesh in Bloemfontein on Saturday. In 2022, the India U19 side, led by Yash Dhull had beaten England by four wickets in the West Indies to clinch the Boys in Blue’s fifth title. Uday Saharan was a reserve player in that tournament but two years later, the 19-year-old returns to the side, this time as captain.

The 2024 edition of the U19 World Cup was originally slated to take place in Sri Lanka but was later shifted to South Africa by the ICC. A total of 16 teams are competing the in the tournament, who have been divided into four groups of four teams each.

India have been placed in Group A, along with Bangladesh, USA and Ireland. The last time the tournament was held in South Africa, India and Bangladesh had locked horns in the final of the U19 World Cup in 2020. That was a match where Yashasvi Jaiswal had scored 88 runs in that match but his knock got overshadowed by Parvez Hossain Emon (47) and Akbar Ali (43*) as Bangladesh chased down 170 in a rain-curtailed contest to win their maiden title.

The India U19 side was recently in action during a tri-nation series in South Africa, which also had Afghanistan participating. India and South Africa made the final of the tournament, which was washed out due to rain as both teams shared the honours.
