Eyes on Bumrah’s fitness, Shami’s possible inclusion
One of the key talking points ahead India’s squad announcement is that of Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. Bumrah had sustained a back spasm on Day two of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney earlier in January, and consulted his personal doctor in New Zealand. Recently, it was also reported that Bumrah had been advised bed rest at home due to the injury, but the pacer has rubbished the reports and said it’s “fake news” . Bumrah had picked up 32 wickets from five Tests during the Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia, while also leading India to a 295-run win in the first Test in Perth.
Mohammed Shami, on the other hand, could make his return to the Indian team after a long injury layoff. Shami has not played for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia, when he had sustained an ankle injury. Shami recently played the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Bengal, picking up five wickets from three games. He has already been included in the India squad for the T20 series against England that begins from 22 January.
