So far, six teams have announced their preliminary squads for the 2025 Champions Trophy. We take a look at each of the squads:

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has snubbed Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja from his India squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. “I think one among Sanju Samson or Rishabh Pant should be picked. I feel Sanju should be preferred because he had played in South Africa. Rishabh played well in Australia, but it was a long tour, so if he is rested, it’s not a big thing,” he said on his YouTube channel.

Former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan have made their picks for the India squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Their combined squad has the likes of regulars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, whereas young Nitish Kumar Reddy also features.

India batter Shreyas Iyer is ready to bat anywhere if he is picked in the squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. The BCCI is likely to announce India squad for the Champions Trophy on 18 or 19 January. “Absolutely. I’m flexible and ready to bat anywhere in the batting order. KL and I, we played that important role in the middle during the World Cup.

“We had a great season together. It was just the last bit [the final] that we could not execute the way we wanted to. It will be a proud moment for me if I were to be picked in the Champions Trophy side to represent the country,” Iyer was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing flak for the state of the three venues that are scheduled to host matches in the ICC Champions Trophy. With a little over a month left for the tournament to get underway, construction work at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Karachi’s National Stadium and the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi is yet to be completed.

The ICC was even reportedly considering moving the tournament to the United Arab Emirates, where India will be playing their matches in Dubai. The PCB, however, played down concern over its venues, stating they would be ready in time for the handover to the world governing body on 12 February and that the tournament will go ahead as planned. After a stellar performance in the Test series in Australia, in which he was the leading wicket-taker with 32 scalps, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be sidelined for sometime and check into the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for a back injury that he had suffered in the fifth Test in Sydney.

Bumrah wasn’t included in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England and will also be rested for the one-dayers against the same team. The senior pacer will even miss the group stage of the Champions Trophy as he is not expected to regain fitness until the first week of March.

South Africa, winners of the inaugural edition of the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998 (knock as the ICC KnockOut Tournament back then), are the latest team to have unveiled their provisional squad for the upcoming mega event. Anrich Nortje, who had missed the Proteas’ 2023 ODI World Cup campaign in which they had reached the semi-finals, returns from injury as does pace colleague Lungi Ngidi, while Gerald Coetzee misses out.

Additionally, the upcoming Champions Trophy will be the first ICC event since 2014 to not feature wicketkeeper-opener Quinton de Kock.

Two-time champions Australia had announced their 15-man squad on Monday, with skipper Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood included in the squad despite carrying fitness concerns and being rested for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Top-order batter Jake Fraser-McGurk was among the notable absentees from the squad.

Hashmatullah Shahidi has been retained as captain of Afghanistan’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, with the top-order batting having nearly led the Afghans to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup in India after victories over England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

After New Zealand, Bangladesh announced their squad for the Champions Trophy, the event in which they had reached the semi-finals in 2017. The Tigers left out Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das from the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led squad, the former’s 18-year international career likely coming to an end as a result of the exclusion.

New Zealand were the first of three teams to unveil their provisional squad for the Champions Trophy on the 12th January deadline set by the ICC, with the Black Caps – who had won the 2000 edition of the tournament after defeating India in the final – recalling pacers Lockie Ferguson and Ben Sears.

Two-time runners-up England were the first team to unveil their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, having done so shortly before Christmas. Here’s the full squad:

“How can I comment on the judgement of others? I think the selectors would have though about it…So, if I say something it would be criticising them. I don’t want to criticise them. They (selectors) are a group of people who must have planned and thought about that,” World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev said in an event in New Delhi on Monday.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has likely been rested for the T20I series against England and could make his ODI debut against the same team before the ICC Champions Trophy. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, has likely been dropped from the shortest format with the selectors going with Sanju Samson as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter.

Rohit Sharma is going through one of the lowest points of his career, and certainly his lowest point as captain, with India suffering a 0-3 whitewash at home against New Zealand before surrendering the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia with a 1-3 loss.

While the BCCI will be taking a call on sticking with him as the Test captain later this year when India visit England for a five-match series, Rohit has been a successful white-ball leader and will remain so in the upcoming ODI series against England and in the Champions Trophy.

The biggest talking point in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England that gets underway on 22 January is the inclusion of senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who has not represented the Men in Blue since the 2023 ICC World Cup, in which he had finished as the highest wicket-taker.

And a notable exclusion from the Suryakumar Yadav-led squad was Rishabh Pant, with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee appearing to have gone with Sanju Samson as their preferred option for the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot as well as for one of the two opening positions.

Also missing was opener Yashasvi Jaiswal as well as senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, but they have been rested, with the latter currently recovering from a back issue.

Two-time runners-up England were the first to unveil their provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, having done so on 22 December, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also including the squad for the white-ball tour of India in the announcement.

New Zealand were the second to do so, announcing it early on Sunday, and were followed by Bangladesh and Afghanistan later in the day. Two-time champions Australia and inaugural champions South Africa announced their squads on Monday.

Which leaves us with arch-rivals India and Pakistan – who also happen to be the hosts and defending champions – are the only ones left at the moment.

The BCCI had announced India’s squad for the T20I series against England on Saturday, and was expected to reveal the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy by Sunday, but has asked the ICC for an extension for now.
