India squad for ICC Champions Trophy and England ODI series LIVE: David Lloyd's verdict on Virat Kohli's future

Former England cricketer David Lloyd has said that Virat Kohli’s time in international cricket is up. “Virat Kohli knows he is past his best and that will hurt. When India come to England, you know where he’s going to be. Just outside off stump, and the business area will be the slips. At 36 years of age, up in the mind, he knows what he should be doing. Your reflexes gently go. Ponting said he carried on a bit longer than he usually would have. The selectors should know. He is one of the greatest players we have seen but is past his best,” he said on talkSport Cricket. The coach Gautam Gambhir will have an enormous say, a big say, because he has been in that dressing room. He has lost time. His time is over,” he added.

India squad for ICC Champions Trophy and England ODI series LIVE: Ian Chappell urges Virat Kohli to stop 'senseless antics'

India batter Virat Kohli endured a disappointing outing in Australia during the Test series, but he was still synonymous for his animated behaviour on the field. This even included that of shoulder-bumping teenager Sam Konstas. Australia legend Ian Chappell believes Kohli must stop this “senseless” behaviour. “His (Kohli’s) consistency needs to improve in addition to dispensing valuable advice to younger players. He also has to stop his senseless antics like shouldering Sam Konstas in the MCG Test. If Kohli does decide to retire from Test cricket, the loss of both him and Rohit would leave a huge gap in the line-up for a tough tour,” Chappell said on ESPNCricinfo.

India squad for ICC Champions Trophy and England ODI series LIVE: Kapil Dev avoids commenting on Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant's exclusion from England T20Is

India squad for ICC Champions Trophy and England ODI series LIVE: Who were some of the notable exclusions and inclusions in India's squad for the T20I series against England?

The biggest talking point in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England that gets underway on 22 January is the inclusion of senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who has not represented the Men in Blue since the 2023 ICC World Cup, in which he had finished as the highest wicket-taker.

And a notable exclusion from the Suryakumar Yadav-led squad was Rishabh Pant, with the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee appearing to have gone with Sanju Samson as their preferred option for the wicketkeeper-batter’s slot as well as for one of the two opening positions.

Also missing was opener Yashasvi Jaiswal as well as senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, but they have been rested, with the latter currently recovering from a back issue.

The BCCI had announced India’s squad for the T20I series against England on Saturday, and was expected to reveal the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy by Sunday, but has asked the ICC for an extension for now.

Stay tuned for more updates.

India squads for England ODI series and Champions Trophy Highlights: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce squads for the ODI series against England as well as the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy either on 18 or 19 January. The International Cricket Council (ICC) had set 12 January as the deadline for all teams to announce their squad for the Champions Trophy. However, India and Pakistan are yet to announce their squads.

Why hasn’t the BCCI announced the India squad for the Champions Trophy?

The fitness of Jasprit Bumrah could be one of the reasons why the BCCI hasn’t announced the India squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Bumrah had sustained a back spasm on Day two of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, and the BCCI is carefully monitoring the pacer. There are also concerns over the form of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have for a long time been the backbone of the Indian team. The two of them endured underwhelming series in Australia and the BCCI will want them to fire on all cylinders in the Champions Trophy.

Which teams are in India’s Champions Trophy group?

India are in Group A along with Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand. India open their campaign against Bangladesh on 20 February, before facing Pakistan three days later. They will round off their group stage against New Zealand on 2 March. India will pay all of their matches in Dubai.
