Former India cricketer S Badrinath has picked his India squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Badrinath has picked KL Rahul as a specialist batter, with Rishabh Pant being his first-choice wicketkeeper. Badrinath preferred Washington Sundar and Mukesh Kumar over Ravidra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah.

Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle has chosen his India squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy, but that doesn’t have pacer Jasprit Bumrah. “Let me outline my assumptions and starting point. I will assume that two of India’s premier bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna, may not be available due to injuries. If they are fit, fantastic,” said Bhogle.

In a major blow to India’s hopes of winning a second ICC event in as many years, and the Champions Trophy for the second time in three editions, senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah isn’t likely to recover from the back injury that he picked up in the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney until the first week of March.

Bumrah will be undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and has been rested for the T20I series against England. Given his current physical state, he will also be ruled out of the England one-dayers, but could recover in time for the Champions Trophy semi-finals and final, if the Men in Blue qualify. Team India will be playing their matches in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy at a neutral venue – the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates – after the BCCI refused to send the team to Pakistan citing security concerns.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla told reporters in Mumbai on Sunday that the squads for the three-match ODI series against England as well as the ICC Champions Trophy, which are expected to be largely similar, will be unveiled this weekend – i.e. by 18 or 19 January.

This will be exactly one month before the ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy gets underway.

Here’s the full squad for the five-match T20I series against England announced by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee on Saturday:

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had unveiled India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England on Saturday, in which they included senior pacer Mohammed Shami – who hasn’t represented the Men in Blue since the 2023 ICC World Cup and who only recently returned to competitive cricket after recovering from an ankle surgery as well as a swelling on the knees.

Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal were some of the notable exclusions, although the latter has been rested for the series while the former has been released from the T20I setup in favour of Sanju Samson, who appears to be the first-choice Indian wicketkeeper-batter for the shortest format.

Additionally, all-rounder Axar Patel has now been appointed vice-captain of the Suryakumar Yadav-led T20I team. ( **READ MORE** )

Among the teams participating in the ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy that gets underway next month, arch-rivals India and Pakistan are the only teams yet to unveil their provisional squads. This despite the ICC setting a deadline of 12 January for teams to announce their provisional squads, giving them the freedom to make changes to the same till 13 February.

England were the first to do so, having made the announcement on 21 December, while New Zealand, Bangladesh and Afghanistan unveiled theirs on Sunday – the deadline day. Australia and South Africa would then announce their squads on Monday after the initial deadline had lapsed.

The BCCI had unveiled India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England on Saturday. When will they make the announcement for the ODI fixtures though?
