ICC World Cup Factbox: How India have fared in quadrennial showpiece event over the years

India will enter the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as one of the favourites for the coveted trophy being the No 1 team in the ODI format and the hosts of the tournament. Having won the Asia Cup recently and beaten Australia 2-1 in a three-match series, India are in top form going into the mega event with most of their star players back from injury. World Cup 2023: News | Schedule | Results | Points table After long injury layoffs, the first-choice trio of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah returned just in time to take part in the crucial match in the Asia Cup and against Australia. Hearteningly for India, all three of them managed to register impressive performances in the last month which has allayed the fears that India would be undercooked as a team in the World Cup. The biggest challenge for India would be their ICC title drought. The last time they won an ICC title was in 2013 when they clinched the Champions Trophy. However, India won the ODI World Cup the last time it was held in India, in 2011. Rohit Sharma and Co will now hope to repeat the 2011 feat. Here’s everything you need to know about Team India’s upcoming campaign and their World Cup history. Titles: 2 (1983, 2011) World Cup recap: India’s financial might in world cricket hasn’t really translated into World Cup titles but they are still the joint-second most successful team alongside West Indies with two titles. Australia lead the race with five titles. India are also one of the only seven nations to take part in all the previous 12 editions. There isn’t much to remember about India’s participation in the 1975 and 1979 World Cups where the team failed to get out of the group stage after securing just one victory across two editions. However, they went on to stun everyone by winning the 1983 World Cup under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. The 1983 World Cup win is largely considered the seminal moment that led to India becoming a cricketing powerhouse. Since then India have been pretty consistent in World Cups apart from the 1992, 1999, and 2007 editions where they failed to get out of the group stage. In 2011 they won their second trophy at home under the leadership of MS Dhoni and reached the semi-finals in the last two editions (2015 and 2019). Edition-wise performances 1975: Group stage 1979: Group stage 1983: Champions 1987: Semi-finals 1992: Round-robin stage 1996: Semi-finals 1999: Super Six 2003: Runners-up 2007: Group stage 2011: Champions 2015: Semi-finals 2019: Semi-finals World Cup record: Matches: 89; Won: 53; Lost: 33; No Result: 3 Team records (World Cup) Highest total: 413/5 vs Bermuda in Port of Spain, 2007 Lowest total: 125 vs Australia in Centurion, 2003 Individual records (World Cup) Most runs — Sachin Tendulkar (2278 runs) Most wickets — Zaheer Khan (44 wickets) Highest individual score — Sourav Ganguly (183 runs vs Sri Lanka in Taunton, 1999) Best bowling figures — Ashish Nehra (6/23 vs England in Durban, 2003) Most catches — Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli (14 catches) ICC ODI ranking: 1 Schedule 8 October: vs Australia in Chennai 11 October: vs Afghanistan in Delhi 14 October: vs Pakistan in Ahmedabad 19 October: vs Bangladesh in Pune 22 October: vs New Zealand in Dharamsala 29 October: vs England in Lucknow 2 November: vs Sri Lanka in Mumbai 5 November: vs South Africa in Kolkata 12 November: vs Netherlands in Bengaluru World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav _Click here for latest 2023 World Cup news_
