Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of bowlers for India as he picked up three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja took one each. Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma contributed the most runs to South Africa's total on the opening day, while Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton also played gritty knocks. Bumrah, meanwhile, gets a breather after a three-over spell, all three overs being a maiden. Excellent piece of fielding by Nitish Kumar Reddy in this over as he gives the ball a chase and puts in a dive at deep square leg to save a run, but hurts his shoulder after colliding with the LED advertising board. Muthusamy had enough time to come back for a third after playing a short-arm jab off a short-of-length ball. SA 259/6 after 89

Anil Kumble thinks spinners will get more help from pitch today

India did really well to restrict South Africa to 247 and pick up those 6 wickets. I think the pitch will start to change as the day progresses. Post-lunch, it will start turning a lot more. The first innings is going to be critical for India. If they can restrict South Africa to less than 300, and then bat really well. It’s still a good wicket. It’s not like Kolkata with uneven bounce.

Anil Kumble says India should be satisfied with their performance on Day 1

On a challenging pitch like this, it hasn’t been easy to score runs, and India did not offer any loose deliveries. This disciplined bowling gave India a genuine chance to claim those wickets. Overall, India should be fairly satisfied with their performance today.

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on why South Africa batters failed to convert starts

I think we kept pressure on for long periods of time. And when scoring’s not that easy, when you can only really score off bad balls, it sort of adds pressure onto the batting units. And maybe that’s the reason for guys getting in and no one getting a big score yet.

Who will bat in Shubman Gill's place at No. 4?

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has confirmed a reshuffle in the batting order in the absence of Shubman Gill. Washington Sundar will return to a lower-middle-order role at No. 8, while Sai Sudharsan will take the No. 3 spot. Dhruv Jurel, who batted at No. 4 in the last game after Gill got injured, will remain in the position for this match as well.

Here's what Tristan Stubbs said after the end of play on Day 1 of 2nd Test

I think a bit disappointing in the end there. I think all of us in the top six got in and no one’s really made that big one. I actually think I prefer batting at 3 than anywhere else. It (pitch) played quite nicely, but I think they bowled quite well. It was quite hard to score. But it wasn’t free-flowing. You felt comfortable, but the scoreboard wasn’t going anywhere. So I thought they bowled quite well. Every time he (Kuldeep) has come on, he’s sort of gone a bit slow with the first ball, and I managed to work his first ball of the spell. And if anything, it just beat me with the drift. I can’t believe Kuldeep got me out. Yeah (about playing Kuldeep in the nets for Delhi Capitals) and KL caught it. That makes your life that much more difficult. I think first-innings runs are going to be big. Hopefully Scholesy (Verreynne) and Sen (Muthusamy) can extend for as long as possible tomorrow and we can bat for as long as possible. And then bowl as best we can. I think that’ll be the game plan. Just extend the first innings for as long as we can. Hopefully the guys who come in now don’t give it away and get 40s, and someone can get 100.

What happened on Day 1 of the 2nd Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati?

South Africa reached 247/6 at stumps on Day 1 after choosing to bat in the second Test. On a much better batting pitch than Kolkata, India’s bowlers stayed disciplined, with Kuldeep Yadav taking 3 wickets and Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja picking one each. Tristan Stubbs (49) and Temba Bavuma (41) scored the most runs after Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton before Indian bowlers struck. Senuran Muthusamy (25 not out) and Kyle Verreynne (1 not out) will resume on Day 2 as South Africa look to push past 300.

India vs South Africa, 2nd Test Day 2 Live Score: South Africa ended Day 1 at 247/6 after choosing to bat first in the second Test at Guwahati . The pitch was much better for batting compared to Kolkata, but India still bowled with good discipline and did not allow South Africa to run away with the game.

Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton gave the visitors a steady start with an 82-run stand, but both fell quickly, and India came back well. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a brilliant spell in the morning and finally got Markram. Rickelton also fell soon after, giving India two wickets in quick time.

After that, Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs tried to rebuild the innings. Both played patiently on a slow surface and added important runs for South Africa. Stubbs looked solid, while Bavuma played a captain’s knock. But India again fought back after lunch.

Ravindra Jadeja removed Bavuma, and then Kuldeep Yadav took charge in the second half of the day. Kuldeep was the best bowler for India, picking 3 wickets, including Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder. Mohammed Siraj also chipped in by removing Tony de Zorzi late in the day.

For South Africa, Senuran Muthusamy stayed unbeaten on 25 and tried to hold one end. Kyle Verreynne was not out on 1 when stumps were called. The visitors will hope to reach around 300 on Day 2 with their lower order.

India will be happy that they kept South Africa to a modest score despite the easier pitch. Day 2 will be important for both teams, as India will look to wrap up the innings quickly.
