Shubman Gill continued his fine run in the ongoing tour of England, going past the three-figure mark for the second time in as many matches during the second Test against England in Birmingham . And on the second Day of what is a crucial Test at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground, the newly-appointed India Test captain celebrated his maiden Test double-hundred.

Gill reached the milestone with a single off Josh Tongue shortly after lunch on Day 2, bringing up the milestone in 311 deliveries and collecting 21 fours and a couple of sixes along the way.

Gill becomes second-youngest Indian to score Test double-ton as captain

The 25-year-old, who succeeds Virat Kohli at the coveted No 4 spot, thus becomes only the second Indian Test captain after the latter to score an overseas double century – with Kohli having previously achieved the feat with a score of 200 against West Indies in North Sound in 2016.

Gill is also the sixth Indian to score a Test double hundred as captain as well as the second-youngest after the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, who had achieved the feat at the age of 23 years and 39 days in 1964.

The single took India to 472/6 at the end of 122 overs, bringing up India’s highest score in the ongoing tour so far. Gill had also top-scored in India’s first innings in the series opener at Headingley, Leeds, producing a sparkling 147 that helped the visitors post 471.

And shortly before tea on the second day, Gill went past Kohli’s unbeaten 254 against South Africa in 2019 to set a new record for the highest individual score by an Indian Test captain.

Gill’s knock along with contributions from spin-bowling all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42) helped India breach the 500-barrier for the first time in the ongoing series.

Quite simply Shubman Gill’s best knock yet… across formats. Both in terms of control and context.
