India captain Suryakumar Yadav and vice captain Shubman Gill failed again on Thursday, December 11 in the second T20I against South Africa in New Chandigarh. The leadership duo has been consistently underperforming in the format and fans are getting impatient.
Gill was dismissed for a Golden Duck as he edged Lungi Ngidi to the first slip in the very first over. Suryakumar who came out to bat at No.4 could face only four deliveries before getting caught behind off Marco Jansen in the fourth over.
Abhishek Sharma to got dismissed early and three early wickets left India at 32/3 in four overs while chasing a massive target of 214. South Africa had posted a total of 213/4 in their 20 overs to post the first 200-plus score against India since the 2024 World Cup.
Gill, Surya both out of form
Gill was brought back into the T20I side ahead of the Asia Cup as vice captain of the team but the opener has not done enough in the chances he has got. He could only face two deliveries in the series opener against South Africa before getting out. In the second game, he lost his wicket on the very first ball.
Gill has not scored a fifty for India in this format in his last 17 innings. In fact, since his return to the T20I side in September, he has crossed 30 only on three occasions.
The fact that Sanju Samson had to be dropped to accommodate Gill has also attracted criticism. Even former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan said that Gill’s poor performance is a big worry for the team.
Shubman Gill’s T20i form is a big worry ahead of the T20 World Cup. Hopefully he finds his touch soon, otherwise it could turn into a real catch-22 situation for Team India.

Quick Reads
View AllSkipper Suryakumar too has been struggling with form for some time now. Once the top-ranked batter in T20 rankings, the right-hander has just scored at an average of 21 since 2024. This year the dip has been even sharper as he averages only 14 in 17 matches.
The drop in form of both captain and vice captain could become a big concern for India with the World Cup fast approaching.
Surya Kumar Yadav has been so bad since he got the captaincy in T20I cricket. It's not looking good for us ahead of the T20 World Cup. pic.twitter.com/MFGh1wgTUr
