India’s new ODI captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still part of India’s long-term plans as the team starts preparing for the 2027 Cricket World Cup. The BCCI recently announced the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia and named Gill as the new captain.
This marks the end of Rohit Sharma as captain of the Indian cricket team. He had already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, and is slated to feature for India in 50-over format only. However, Gill has been made the captain even with Rohit still in side. Speaking to the media for the first time since becoming the ODI skipper, Gill shared an update on Rohit and Kohli’s future.

Ahead of the second Test against West Indies in New Delhi, Gill said the team values the immense experience and match-winning ability of the two senior players and is looking to play them until the next World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka.
“The experience they have and the number of matches they have won for India, there are very few players who have (done) that. There are very few players in the world with such skill, quality and experience. From that perspective, we are definitely looking at them for 2027,” Gill said.
Gill also spoke about what he has learned from Rohit’s leadership style. “There are so many qualities that I have inherited from Rohit bhai, and still want to. The calmness that he poses and shows to us, and the kind of friendships that he has built with the players in the group, is something that I aspire to. These are the qualities that I want to take from him,” he added.
Both Rohit and Kohli are expected to return to international action later this month when India tour Australia for three ODIs and five T20Is. The ODI series will begin in Perth on October 19. This will be the first time fans will see Rohit and Kohli in India colours since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
