Shubman Gill’s leadership in the ongoing third Test against England at Lord’s has caught the attention of many, including former cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Mohammad Kaif, who praised the youngster for his aggressive and fearless style.
Gill is the youngest Indian Test captain at age 25 and he is already on the verge of leading India to back-to-back Test wins on English soil. With strong performances as a batter and bold on-field decisions as captain, Gill is quickly making a name for himself.
Former cricketers praise Gill’s captaincy
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar shared his thoughts on Gill’s temperament during tough moments and urged the youngster to pick between MS Dhoni’s calmness and Virat Kohli’s aggressive nature to bring the best out of himself.
He tweeted, “Gill suddenly looking tentative last evening had a lot to do with the hostility he got at the crease from England. Virat performed better, the angrier he got. Dhoni the exact opposite. Gill must decide what gets the best out of him as batter, calmness or anger.”
Meanwhile, Mohammad Kaif compared Gill with former India captain Sourav Ganguly, under whose leadership India registered one of the most powerful overseas wins in 2002.
“This July 13 is special. Dada led us to the Natwest title with aggression and ambition. Now 23 years later, Shubman Gill’s doing the same with his young team. And we didn’t chase down 325 by playing Bazball,” Kaif posted on X.
Gill’s tactical skills were on full display on Day 4, when he rotated his bowlers smartly and created constant pressure on England. Washington Sundar picked up four wickets, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj got two each as England were bowled out for just 192. India have a slight edge going into Day 5 as they need 135 runs to win with six wickets in hand.

More ShortsGill also showed emotions on the field. In the first innings, he got into a heated exchange with the umpires over the condition of the second new ball. Later, on Day 3, he had a tense moment with England’s openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, when he felt they were deliberately wasting time. Gill gave Crawley a long stare and even got involved in an argument.
