Indian batter Shreyas Iyer will continue to be in Sydney despite the ODI series between India and Australia coming to an end on Saturday as he recovers from an injury to his spleen. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday provided a detailed update on his injury and treatment.

Iyer injured his spleen while taking a sensational catch running back in the third and final ODI at Sydney. Iyer took the catch between backward point and deep third to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling, but ended up injuring his ribcage after making an awkward landing.

He did not take any further part in the match as he was taken to a hospital for evaluation and assessment of his injury.

India won the match by nine wickets as Rohit Sharma made 121 not out and Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 74 in the 237-run chase and Iyer was not required to bat.

BCCI provides latest Shreyas Iyer injury details

The BCCI has now revealed that Iyer continues to be in Sydney, where he is receiving treatment for a laceration injury to the spleen. The board added that an Indian team doctor has stayed back with Iyer in Sydney to evaluate his progress.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” BCCI said in a statement.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

A separate report in the news agency PTI has claimed that the 30-year-old Mumbai cricketer was admitted to the ICU for two days due to internal bleeding.

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately.

“He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding,” a source said.

Iyer is now “stable,” but it could have been “fatal” had he not received treatment immediately.

Shreyas is not a part of the Indian T20I team, which will play a five-match series against Australia, starting from Wednesday (29 October).
