India became the T20 World Cup champions for the second successive time on Sunday (March 8) as they defeated New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Players celebrated hard but once the dust settled, they had to go home. For Shivam Dube, it was even more important to reach home as quickly as possible.
Dube hit a crucial 26 not out in just eight balls to push India’s score over 250 in the final where India won by 96 runs to win their third T20 world title. After that, Dube wanted to rush back home in Mumbai to be with his four-year-old son Ayaan and two-year-old daughter Mehwish,
However, with all the flights booked, Dube had to go via train and even there he got a 3AC ticket. To go home quickly, he had to travel by train and there he risked getting mobbed. But he had a plan.
Dube’s plan to escape attention
Dube had devised a strategy to travel by train without anyone knowing. According to the Indian Express, he had told his wife to enter the train early and wait for Dube who would enter the train at the last moment. The ticket collector asked Dube’s wife whether the name on the rolls was of the cricketer Shivam Dube.
“No, no. Woh kahan se aayega (where will he come from)?” she said to send the TC away. Then Dube arrived with his face masked and just slept through the journey.
“I wore a cap, a mask and a full-sleeved T-shirt. It was a 5.10-am train so we hoped there would not be many people on the platform,” he said.
“At night, I got down from the berth but no one recognised me on the way to the washroom and back. The train trip was smooth but I was worried about getting down at Borivali in broad daylight. I couldn’t have escaped attention there,” he said.
