The term Sanju Samson ban has been trending heavily on social media ahead of the second semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 between powerhouses India and England. Many fans are worried after speculations on social media claimed that Samson may be banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his celebration after the match-winning knock against West Indies in the Super 8.

What exactly happened?

After hitting the winning boundary at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, Samson removed his helmet and dropped it to the ground in celebration. He then went down on his knees and thanked his god. Some believe Samson’s act of “throwing” the helmet could fall under the ICC rule “abuse of cricket equipment.”

At this moment, there is no official confirmation that the ICC is looking to take action against Samson. However, there is a buzz on social media platforms that the global body may suspend Samson for a match if he’s found guilty.

What does the ICC rule say?

Under Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players must not abuse cricket equipment. This includes actions like throwing or hitting helmets, bats, stumps or any other equipment. Even if the act is done in emotion and not anger, it can still be reviewed and action could be taken.

The rule also mentions that any action which results in damage to equipment or stadium property can be considered a breach. Recently, Scotland cricketer George Munsey was given one demerit point for throwing his helmet after getting out in a T20 World Cup 2026 match. So, action in such cases is possible.

Can Samson be suspended?

Technically, Sanju Samson can be punished if match officials feel that the helmet was thrown. In most cases, this kind of offence is treated as a Level 1 offence. The maximum punishment for a Level 1 breach is a fine of up to 50% of the match fee and two demerit points.

Usually, players are not banned for such actions and are only handed demerit points. Match referees also consider the context in which the action was displayed. Celebrations are usually treated more softly compared to acts done in anger. So, a ban on Samson is unlikely.

When is the India vs England semifinal?

India will face England in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal on March 5 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The match will begin at 7:00 PM IST. The winner of this clash will face either South Africa or New Zealand in the final on Sunday, March 8.
