Rohit Sharma lasted just 14 balls on his return to international cricket on Sunday at Perth as he was dismissed early on by pacer Josh Hazlewood in India’s first ODI against Australia. Rohit’s quick dismissal came after he joined an exclusive list including Indian legends Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.
As Mitch Marsh won the toss and Australia opted to bowl first, Rohit made a cautious start and also slammed Mitch Starc for a beautiful straight drive four. But his stay at the crease was cut short by a Hazlewood back-of-the-length ball that surprised the former India captain with extra bounce and kissed his bat on its way to the second slip.
Rohit could have left the ball, but he was guilty of poking at it as the ball moved away just a bit. Soon after, Kohli fell for a duck.
Nonetheless, Rohit achieved a big milestone with the first India vs Australia ODI at Perth. This is Rohit’s first international match in over seven months after announcing retirement from Tests.
With his comeback, Rohit has now completed 500 international matches, becoming only the fifth Indian cricketer to achieve such a feat. The Perth ODI is his 274th 50-over match and he has also played 67 Tests and 59 T20Is for India.
Sachin Tendulkar leads the list for Indian cricketers with the highest number of international matches, having played 664 matches across three formats. Sachin is also the only cricketer ever to play 200 Tests, besides holding the record for playing the highest number of ODIs (463). The Master Blaster only played one T20I match in his career, against South Africa in December 2006.
