India suffered a worrying moment on Day 1 of the Manchester Test after star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt. Pant was struck on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep during his innings and was taken off the field in an ambulance buggy.

Pant was taken to a hospital from the stadium for scans soon after the incident. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the medical team is closely monitoring his condition and will provide further updates once the scan reports are available.

Pant was looking in good touch before the injury. He was batting on 37 off 48 balls before suffering the blow. His sudden exit has left India in a tricky spot. Speaking after stumps, Pant’s teammate Sai Sudharsan admitted that the vice-captain’s absence could hurt India’s chances.

“He was in a lot of pain and is currently at the hospital undergoing scans. We’ll probably get an update soon. If he doesn’t return in this match, it’s obviously a blow, but the other batters are ready to step up,” Sai Sudharsan said after the end of play on Day 1.

Before Pant was injured, he forged a crucial partnership with Sudharsan to bring India out of a tough situation. After a solid opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul in the first session, India lost three wickets post-lunch. However, Sudharsan and Pant batted cautiously and helped India avoid another collapse.

Following Pant’s departure, Ravindra Jadeja joined Sudharsan in the middle. However, Sudharsan couldn’t stay for long and was dismissed by Ben Stokes for 61 off 151 balls. Shardul Thakur then came to the crease to see out the final few minutes of the day. He and Jadeja remained unbeaten on 19 each at stumps, with India at 264/4 in 83 overs.
