The all-rounder and his teammates had actually appealed for a leg-before against the in-form keeper-batter, opting for a review after the umpire shook his head only to burn it with an inside-edge detected on UltraEdge.

Unfortunately for Pant, the slight under-edge couldn’t alter the direction of the ball and ensured it struck him at full pace near the toes.

Pant promptly signalled for the team physio, and was eventually forced to take the ambulance ride back due to his inability to walk as the on-field treatment hardly made a difference.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has scored a half-century in each of his last four appearances, was already padded up in the dressing room well before Pant was driven off the ground. And he remained unbeaten along with fellow all-rounder Shardul Thakur, both batting on 19, as India reached 264/4 at close of play, stumps being called slightly earlier than expected due to poor light.

Indian No 3 B Sai Sudharsan, who was brought back into the XI at Karun Nair’s expensive after making his Test debut in the series opener at Headingley, had been dismissed by England captain Ben Stokes shortly after Pant’s injury, but not before completing his maiden half-century (61 off 151 balls) in the format.

England had earlier opted to field under overcast conditions after skipper Stokes won the toss for the fourth time in as many Tests in the ongoing series. They are hoping to clinch the five-match series with a game to spare after going 2-1 up with a thrilling 22-run victory at Lord’s.
