The ongoing drama between the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen took another turn this week. Tareen issued a sarcastic apology to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after the board sent him a legal notice accusing him of breaking his franchise agreement and criticising the league publicly.
In a nearly five-minute video shared on social media, Tareen apologised in a sarcastic tone while continuing to mock the PCB. He claimed the board only wanted “yes-men and minions” and criticised them for being unable to handle any criticism. This is expected to make the situation worse for the franchise.
“Only a big man apologises. I apologise for wanting to make the PSL better… I apologise for raising my voice when I saw problems. It is my fault, not yours, that I was dissatisfied with your mediocre mindset. I apologise for being unhappy that you give yourselves so much credit for doing so little. I hope you like my apology video,” Tareen said as he held up the legal notice and tore it in half at the end of the video.

PSL vs Multan Sultans controversy explained
Tareen has been very vocal about a number of issues with the PSL in the past. He has criticised the league over branding claims of PSL 2025 being the biggest and the best, even as fewer fans are coming to the stadium or watching on TV. His complaints range from small things, like artists lip-syncing at the opening ceremony, to bigger issues about the growth and transparency of the PSL.

More ShortsTareen also took shots at the PSL’s handling of events, including problems with microphones during the player draft. In recent weeks, Tareen has demanded more clarity on the PSL’s rebidding process for franchise teams. The original 10-year contracts for all teams are ending, and Tareen wants the process to be fair and open.
The PCB’s legal notice, sent on September 12, accused Tareen of making “false, malicious, baseless, and defamatory allegations” and warned of the most severe action possible, including blacklisting him from franchise ownership. The board claimed Tareen had tried to devalue the PSL brand to later buy the Multan Sultans at a lower price.
Tareen has also claimed that the board is yet to release full distributions for the previous two editions of PSL. “Someone please remind the folks making very important and crucial podcast content that franchises still haven’t received their full distributions for PSL9 and PSL10. Content is great, but clear your dues first and then interview yourself,” he wrote on X.
If the PSL takes action, Tareen could lose ownership of the Multan Sultans and be excluded from the league in the upcoming season.
