After retaining the bulk of their core group ahead of the mega auction in November, Mumbai Indians will be aiming to end their five-year title drought in the Indian Premier League this season. Pace star Jasprit Bumrah was MI’s top retention at Rs Rs 18 crore ahead of the auction alongside captain Hardik Pandya and India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who were retained at Rs 16.35 crore each.

The franchise also decided to stick with former captain Rohit Sharma (Rs 16.30 crore), under whose leadership the five-time IPL champions have won all of their titles till date, despite his decline as a batter in recent seasons. And with rising star Tilak Varma getting retained for Rs 8 crore, the Reliance Industries-owned franchise certainly has its sights set on the future.

As for their key acquisitions in the auction, MI are set to reunite with New Zealand left-arm pacer Trent Boult and have also added pacer Deepak Chahar and top-order batters Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton. New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner is also part of the squad.

MI are yet to reach an IPL final since winning back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020, going as far as Qualifier 2 in 2023, narrowly missing out on the playoffs in 2021 and finishing at the bottom of the table twice (2022 and 2024). Pandya and Co, however, will be hopeful of turning things around this season, starting with a high-voltage showdown against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Sunday.

How Mumbai Indians had fared in the previous IPL season

Not only was the 17th IPL season a forgettable one for a franchise of MI’s stature, with the five-time champions finishing at the bottom of the table for the second time in three seasons, it was a season that was marred with controversies. All-rounder Pandya had been drafted to MI from GT in a blockbuster trade ahead of the mini auction in December and had replaced Rohit as captain , a move that did not go down well with many, from fans and certain members of the team to reportedly the ‘Hitman’ himself.

Pandya was booed at the Wankhede Stadium as well as the Narendra Modi Stadium, his current and his former home ground, along with several other venues during the course of the season. And his body language was similar to that of his teammates and reflected in their performances as they finished with just four wins and 10 defeats across the season.
