Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has given fans a big reason to smile, confirming that former skipper MS Dhoni will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter and former India captain has no immediate plans to retire from the game, suggested the senior official.
Speaking to his grandson Noah in Provoke Lifestyle magazine, Viswanathan said, “No, he is not retiring for this IPL.” When asked further about Dhoni’s retirement plans, the CSK CEO jokingly replied, “I’ll check with him and let you know,” keeping the suspense alive in typical Dhoni fashion.
Dhoni has refused to make his retirement plans public despite speculations surrounding his big career move doing the rounds every IPL season. The veteran keeper retired from international cricket in 2019, but continues to play in the T20 league.
Dhoni on his future
Recently, Dhoni himself spoke about his future during an event. “Well, it depends. Again, I would say the same thing — I have four or five months to decide. There’s no hurry to decide what is to be done. I’m not saying I’m done, I’m not saying I’m coming back at the same time,” he said.
However, the latest comments from the CSK management have confirmed for now that Dhoni will play at least one more season in IPL 2026.
MS Dhoni has guided CSK to a record five IPL titles under his captaincy. He relinquished the role briefly in 2022 before returning in 2023 to lead the team to their fifth title. Dhoni once again took charge as CSK captain in IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury.
CSK suffered their worst record in IPL 2025 as they finished at the bottom of the points table and failed to make the playoffs for the second season in a row.
