Champions Trophy 2025: Mohammed Shami becomes second-fastest player to reach 200 ODI wickets

With the dismissal of Bangladesh’s Jaker Ali in the Champions Trophy 2025 match, Mohammed Shami became the seventh Indian bowler to take 200 wickets in ODI cricket. He has also become the second-fastest player in the world to achieve this feat and the fastest Indian to do so.

Mohammed Shami achieved the massive feat of 200 ODI wickets on Thursday in the Champions Trophy 2025 match between India and Bangladesh on Thursday. Shami reached the milestone with Jaker Ali’s dismissal in the 43rd over.

He is the seventh Indian bowler to take 200 or more wickets in ODIs. Anil Kumble leads the list with 334 wickets followed by Javagal Srinatha (315) and Ajit Garkar (288). He also became the second-fastest men’s player to reach 200 ODI wickets, in terms of matches played. Only Australia’s Mitchell Starc has achieved the feat quicker than Shami.

Shami, who was rested by India for the third ODI against England at Ahmedabad earlier this month, returned to the playing XI for the Champions Trophy 2025 opener, allowing Men in Blue to make a blistering start to the match.

Shami shines on return to ICC event

The 34-year-old right-arm pacer dismissed Soumya Sarkar for a duck in the first over of the match as he marked a successful return to ICC events. Shami’s last match in an ICC event was the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia.

The second wicket of the day for the Bengal pacer came in the seventh over of the game when he removed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for five off 10 balls.

Shami had started the match with 197 wickets from 103 ODIs at an average of 23.96. His best bowling figures in ODIs are 7/57.

Shami has also taken 229 wickets for India in 64 Tests, while 27 wickets have come for him in 25 T20Is.
