There are high chances of rain playing spoilsport during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday (21 May) at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert (the second of four levels) for Mumbai for Wednesday, while AccuWeather predicts 80% chances of rain in Mumbai today.

The AccuWeather also says that there are chances of a “heavy thunderstorm” on late Wednesday Morning in Mumbai and that of a “thunderstorm or two” late at night.

MI vs DC: Mumbai weather report

As per the hourly updates, there’s a 71% chance of rain at around 11 am in Mumbai on Wednesday, but it goes down to 20% by 1 PM and would stay around the same till 5 PM. The chances of rain reduce to 7% around the toss time, 7 PM, and stay the same till midnight.

The probability of precipitation rises to around 49% at 1 AM on Thursday morning (22 May); however, the match should ideally be over by then if rain doesn’t play spoilsport at the start.

In fact, worried about a washout and it spoiling Delhi Capitals’ playoff chances , co-owner Parth Jindal also wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)  on Tuesday, requesting a change of venue away from Mumbai .

While the BCCI has decided to stick with Mumbai for the MI vs DC match, the changes to the playing conditions for the IPL 2025 league game should help them complete a match on Wednesday.

What are the changes to the IPL playing conditions?

As per the media reports on Tuesday, the BCCI has tweaked the IPL playing conditions to ensure that the remaining league matches are completed. The tweak has been necessitated by the fact that India is experiencing the onset of monsoon and the IPL 2025 was halted midway due to the India-Pakistan conflict.

The BCCI has now allowed a two-hour extra time allowance for the league matches. The IPL league games generally have a 60-minute allowance, while 120 minutes of extra time are only available for playoff games.

But with 120 minutes of extra time now allowed for the league games, the IPL match can now start as late as 9.30 PM instead of 7.30 PM without losing overs. Previously, with just one hour of extra time, overs would have been reduced if play hadn’t begun by 8:30 PM.
