Delhi Capitals (DC) co-owner Parth Jindal has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to move the high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match between his team and the Mumbai Indians from Mumbai to some other city due to the threat of a washout. MI take on DC at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday (21 May) in a virtual quarter-final .
Three teams have already qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs, and MI and DC are the only remaining teams fighting for the last spot. MI will qualify for the playoffs if they beat DC on Wednesday; however, a DC win will take the qualification race to the final round of league matches. In case of a washout, both teams will get one point each. This will give MI an advantage as they are currently on 14 points compared to DC, who are on 13 points.
If the Wankhede match is washed out, then MI will move to 15 and DC to 14 before their last league matches.
Delhi Capitals wants venue change for MI match
DC co-owner Parth Jindal on Tuesday wrote an email to BCCI requesting a change in the venue, reported ESPNCricinfo.
“The forecast in Mumbai is for heavy rains and there is a strong likelihood that the game will be washed out,” Jindal wrote. “Just as the game between RCB vs SRH has been moved out of Bengaluru in the quest for consistency and in the interest of the league it is my request that tomorrow’s game also be moved to a different location as we have known for the better part of 6 days that the forecast for 21st in Mumbai is for heavy showers.”
The IPL league games don’t have a reserve day and as per AccuWeather, there’s an 80% chance of rain in Mumbai on Wednesday. There are also predictions for thunderstorms and as a result, there’s a high chance the match will be washed out.
Jindal’s request to BCCI was made after the IPL organisers moved the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) t o Lucknow from Bengaluru because of “unfavourable weather conditions” in the city. The RCB vs SRH match is scheduled for Friday, 23 May.
