The two-time former champions in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will walk into the IPL 2026 mini-auction on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi in a position most franchises would envy — a highest purse of INR 64.30 crore and the freedom to shape the squad largely on their own terms. Yet, that advantage comes with pressure.
A year after lifting the title in 2024, KKR never really looked like defending champions in 2025 and the decision to release several senior players including their most trusted warrior, Andre Russell, underlines that the franchise sees this auction as a reset rather than a touch-up job.
With 13 slots to fill — of which a maximum of six can be overseas — the margin for error is small. KKR are not just shopping for depth; they are shopping for impact, particularly from their overseas recruits.

KKR Squad Analysis and Major Gaps
Looking at KKR’s retained group, it is clear that the management has opted to preserve the core of the side rather than overhaul it completely. Apart from the departure of Russell, the franchise has held on to its key match-winners — Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, Rinku Singh and Harshit Rana — ensuring a solid foundation remains in place. With Ajinkya Rahane (perhaps the only potential leadership option), Ramandeep Singh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Vaibhav Arora retained to play supporting roles, the focus at the auction is primarily on securing three overseas players who can walk straight into the playing XI and make immediate impact.
KKR’s retentions show a preference for continuity in roles that worked for them in the past. Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy remain the twin pillars of the bowling attack, while Rinku Singh continues to be the side’s one of the most reliable batting presence. Harshit Rana’s rise at the international level has given KKR a genuine Indian pace option, with Vaibhav Arora and Umran Malik offering variety.
Rovman Powell is the only retained overseas batting all-rounder, which gives KKR room to be aggressive with their foreign signings at the auction.

Quick Reads
View AllFor all the stability in the retained group, the gaps are hard to miss.Russell’s exit leaves a vacuum in the middle order — not just in terms of power-hitting, but also in the balance he provided as a bowling option in crunch situations.
The wicketkeeper slot is another immediate concern. KKR currently have no specialist wicketkeeper in the retained group of players, making it one of the first problems they must solve at the auction. Ideally, they would want a keeper who can bat in the top order and set the tone early, reducing pressure on a middle order that lacks explosive depth.
The pace attack, while promising in Indian terms, still lacks an experienced overseas quick who can execute at the death or take wickets upfront. With Anrich Nortje and Spencer Johnson no longer part of the setup, that role remains vacant.
KKR Top Targets
Given the size of their purse and the restriction on overseas slots, KKR are expected to follow a targeted strategy rather than a scattergun one at the auction.

Cameron Green is almost certain to feature high on their wishlist. The Australian all-rounder represents a near-ideal structural replacement for Russell — a power-hitter who can also contribute overs of seam and add athleticism in the field. While Green has the ability to open, it is unlikely KKR would deploy him right at the top if they secure his services. With other franchises operating with tighter budgets, KKR should be well placed to land him, although restraint will be crucial given the number of key roles that still need filling. Also, there are a few franchises, who are expected to bid aggressively for Green.
In the wicketkeeper market, familiar names such as Quinton de Kock and Rahmanullah Gurbaz remain strong options, particularly with de Kock’s recent form tilting the balance in his favour. Jonny Bairstow and Finn Allen offer more explosive alternatives, while England’s Ben Duckett, interestingly, listed as a wicketkeeper in the auction pool, could be a smart left-field pick given his aggressive left-handed approach in the powerplay. His England teammate Jamie Smith is another overseas option; despite a modest ongoing Ashes campaign, he remains a high-quality middle-order prospect. Among Indian players, uncapped options such as Tamil Nadu’s Tushar Raheja and Rajasthan’s Kartik Sharma provide depth without using up valuable overseas slots.
Meanwhile, a reunion with Venkatesh Iyer also cannot be ruled out if he becomes available at a manageable price. His ability to bat across positions and his familiarity with the KKR setup add a layer of flexibility that the current squad lacks.
For the overseas fast-bowling slot, Matheesha Pathirana stands out, particularly with Dwayne Bravo part of the KKR support staff. Bravo’s role in Pathirana’s development at Chennai Super Kings could prove influential, and a reunion may help revive the Sri Lankan’s form while strengthening KKR’s death-overs bowling. As a secondary option, New Zealand pacer Matt Henry fits the profile of a bowler who can make early inroads with the new ball — an area where KKR have struggled in past seasons. Left-arm seamer Jason Behrendorff and Mustafizur Rahman also offer a point of difference and added versatility to the pace attack. Among Indian options, Jammu and Kashmir’s impressive Auqib Nabi should be firmly on KKR’s radar.
The franchise — and particularly head coach Abhishek Nayar — may also explore a move for Prithvi Shaw as a backup Indian opener. If available at the right price, Shaw represents a low-risk, high-upside option, with his domestic experience and ability to score quickly at the top addressing a key depth concern.
KKR should also look to have one back-up Indian spin all-rounder in the set-up and someone like Tanush Koitan or Mahipal Lomror may fit into their scheme of things. And if they need a specialist spinner, experienced Rahul Chahar will be up for grabs. Amongst the overseas options, Australia’s Cooper Connolly can be a utility pick.
With 13 slots to fill and only six overseas positions available, KKR’s auction approach will be about precision rather than volume. They have the money and the leverage; what they need now is accuracy. Get the overseas picks right and complement it with smart Indian buys, and KKR can quickly move past the disappointment of 2025 and re-establish themselves as a team to watch out for in the IPL 2026.
