Explained: Why Eden Gardens in Kolkata is unlikely to host the IPL 2025 final

The venue for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs, including the final, could see a change. The IPL 2025 final was originally scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, besides Qualifier 2, while Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi Stadium was scheduled to host Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator.

Both stadiums are now expected to lose the playoff matches after an unexpected break in league matches. As per multiple reports, the IPL 2025 playoffs will be played at the venues picked to finish the remaining league matches.

The IPL 2025 was suspended on 9 May due to the India-Pakistan conflict. Now with the ceasefire in place, the league will resume on 17 May with a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Kolkata Knight Riders. The remaining 13 league matches will be played across six venues – Mumbai, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Jaipur.

As per reports, the IPL 2025 final will also be played at one of these venues. The Cricbuzz says the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad could host the final and the Qualifiers 2, while the Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator could go to the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Why is Kolkata set to miss out on IPL final?

Largely due to weather issues, it seems. AccuWeather has forecast showers and thunderstorms in Kolkata on 3 June — the day of the IPL final. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the early onset of the Southwest monsoon will bring rains to parts of the Bay of Bengal.

Ahmedabad also faces the threat of rain on 3 June as per the forecast but the chances of rain stand at around 33% as compared to 65% in Kolkata for the same day.

The official word on the venue for the IPL 2025 final is expected to be out by the end of the ongoing week.
