India vs South Africa LIVE Score 2nd Test Day 5 Updates: India walk into the final day in Guwahati staring at a near-impossible chase, having ended Day 4 at 27/2 in pursuit of a mammoth 549-run target. Both openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, fell cheaply in the post-lunch session as India once again struggled to negotiate South Africa’s disciplined bowling, leaving the hosts in serious trouble.
Earlier in the day, Tristan Stubbs led the way with an impressive 94, while Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder also contributed crucial runs. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton scored some vital runs at the top. Ravindra Jadeja picked up four wickets for India and Washington Sundar took one.
With the series already slipping away after the Kolkata defeat, India now face the grim prospect of a 0-2 whitewash at home, something that will certainly intensify questions around Gautam Gambhir’s team, who lost to New Zealand in a similar fashion last year.
South Africa eye first series win in India after 25 years
Sai Sudharsan (2 not out) and nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav (4 not out) will resume on the final morning, but with 522 runs still needed, only a miracle can stop South Africa from sealing a series sweep. However, they are still the favourites to win the contest, no matter the scoreline.
This will be South Africa’s first Test series win on Indian soil in 25 years. Their last victory in India came in 2000. India will hope to show some fight on the last day, but the odds remain heavily stacked against them. A draw will at least give them some points in the WTC table, but for that, they will have to bat out the entire day.
For the unversed, the chances of India winning are almost zero even if they start batting drastically better. Only once has over 400 runs been made on Day 5 of a Test match. That was in 1948 when Australia scored 404 runs against England at Headingley.
