Team India will be hoping to continue their winning run in the Test format when they face South Africa in opening game of the two-match series for the Freedom Trophy in Kolkata starting Friday.
The Shubman Gill-led Indian team has won each of its last three outings in the five-day format, starting with a thrilling victory at The Oval that held England to a 2-2 stalemate in August. India would then inflict a 2-0 sweep on West Indies last month after registering comfortable wins in Ahmedabad and Delhi.
India have also had a strong record against the Proteas as far as home Tests are concerned, having won the 2015 and 2019 series by 3-0 margins with just one game ending in a draw during this period.
South Africa have not won a Test since Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn inspired Graeme Smith’s side to an innings victory in Nagpur in 2010, and their only series win in this part of the world came under the late Hansie Cronje’s captaincy in 2000.
Temba Bavuma’s men, however, arrive in India high on confidence despite their poor record in recent Tests in this part of the country. South Africa, after all, are the reigning world Test champions, having defeated Australia by five wickets at Lord’s in June.

They had also held Pakistan to a 1-1 draw in their first assignment since the WTC triumph, defeating the Shan Masood-led hosts by 8 wickets in the second Test in Rawalpindi thanks to a superb turnaround on Day 3.
