The group stage of the 2025 Asia Cup is set to conclude on Friday with eight-time champions India facing Oman in Abu Dhabi. It was at this venue where the 13th edition of the continental showpiece event, which returns to the T20 format this year, got underway with Afghanistan thrashing Hong Kong by 94 runs. And it is the Sheikh Zayed Stadium that will host the final match before the second round of fixtures gets underway.
All four teams for Super 4s confirmed
The match, however, will have little consequence on the Super 4s, which follows the group stage, as far as the lineup of teams is concerned. All four teams, after all, been locked in, with arch-rivals India and Pakistan progressing from Group A and Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from Group B.
India, who are looking to win the T20 version of the event for the second time in three editions, were the first team to qualify, their place in the Super 4s sealed following hosts United Arab Emirates' 42-run victory over neighbours Oman. Pakistan later confirmed their place with a 41-run victory in a do-or-die clash against UAE.
Afghanistan, meanwhile, joined Hong Kong in bowing out in the first round after back-to-back defeats against Bangladesh (8 runs) and Sri Lanka (6 wickets) in a space of three days, resulting in the Lankan Lions and the Bangla Tigers progressing to the next round.
India, meanwhile, appear set to finish top of the group even if they suffer a shock defeat at the hands of Oman – that is unless they suffer a defeat by an astronomical margin against the minnows – the prospect of which appears highly unlikely heading into the match.
Many cricket fans and experts, however, will have one eye on the next round, where a rematch between fierce rivals India and Pakistan awaits. While their group-stage meeting witnessed a one-sided clash and a massive political fall-out over an ignored handshake, one can only wonder what their second meeting has in store.
