India captain Shubman Gill came out in full support of head coach Gautam Gambhir after a heated exchange between Gambhir and The Oval's chief curator, Lee Fortis . The incident took place during India’s practice session on Tuesday, July 29, just before the final Test match against England.

Fortis had reportedly asked the Indian coaches to stay at least 2.5 metres away from the pitch area, even though they were wearing joggers. This did not sit well with the Indian camp, and Gambhir was seen visibly angry and scolding Fortis. Gill has now responded to the drama, and has backed Gambhir.

When asked about the matter in his pre-match press conference, Shubman Gill said the situation was avoidable. “Coach has every right to look at the wicket. Don’t understand why curator won’t allow that. As long you are wearing rubber spike or are bare feet (it should not be a problem) ….don’t know why he said no. There was no such issue in the last four games,” Gill said.

Gill provides update on playing XI

Gill also gave an update on India’s team selection, saying that left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has been asked to stay ready for the fifth Test. “Arshdeep Singh has been asked to get ready but we will take a call on the Playing XI after looking at the pitch, by this evening,” Gill was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Talking about the team’s workload, Gill said it has been tough, especially with how much they’ve had to field. “It’s very difficult when you’ve fielded for around 160 overs. It’s not easy, especially on pitches where fast bowling is used more than spin. Our fast bowlers and team are in a good space. Thankfully, we don’t have as many unavailable players as they do…” Gill said.

Gill also provided an update on Jasprit Bumrah’s availability for the fifth Test. “We will take a decision tomorrow, wicket looks very green. So let’s see,” Gill said. Bumrah had said before the series that he would play just three matches in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
