India are set to begin a new journey in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) with Shubman Gill succeeding Rohit Sharma as captain in the 50-over format as well after being appointed Test captain earlier this year. The development was confirmed during India’s squad announcement for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia that gets underway later this month, in which Rohit and fellow batting great Virat Kohli were included in the ODI squad for the upcoming tour.

Both Rohit and Kohli had retired from Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in June last year and had quit the Test format in May while the 18th season of the Indian Premier League was underway, with Gill being named the former’s successor as red-ball captain shortly after.

Gill takes over ODI captaincy from Rohit

The 26-year-old Gill had led India to a 2-2 draw in a five-match Test series in England earlier this summer, shining in his maiden assignment as captain of the Indian team. And he has now been trusted with captaincy in another format.

Shreyas Iyer, who was another favourite to replace Rohit, has been named as the vice-captain in ODIs, while Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the three-match series. Bumrah is a part of the five-match T20Is in Australia.

Ravindra Jadeja is a major name missing from the ODI squad, while Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav are the spin options in the squad.

Nitish Kumar Reddy has replaced injured Hardik Pandya in the ODI and T20I squads, while Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna are pacers in the 50-over squad.
