Ayush Mhatre led India are all set to take on Afghanistan in the semifinal of the U19 Cricket World Cup going on in Zimbabwe. India are undefeated in the tournament so far while Afghanistan have face one loss so far.
The winner of the semifinal between India and Afghanistan will be facing England in the final who defeated Australia in the first semifinal of the competition on Wednesday.
While Afghanistan are an emerging side, India are the most dominant team in the U19 World Cups. The Indian sides over the years have won five U19 World Cup titles with the most famous of the captains to win the trophy being Virat Kohli who led the team to victory in 2008.
Ahead of the India vs Afghanistan semifinal, we take a look at how the two teams have fared at the semifinal stages of the U19 World Cups.
India record at U19 World Cup semifinals
India have consistently been a force to reckon with at the youth level. They have made five straight semifinals at the U19 World Cups and are looking to make it to the title clash for the sixth consecutive time.
India have made it to the semifinal of the U19 World Cup a total of 11 times in the previous 15 editions of the competition. In these 11 semifinals, India have won 9 and lost only two. India have won the semifinals in 2000, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024.
The only two editions in which India lost the semifinals were in 2002 to South Africa, and in 2004 to Pakistan.
Afghanistan record at U19 World Cup semifinals
Afghanistan’s ascent to the top echelons of international cricket has been spectacular. Till 2010, they were not part of any of the U19 World Cups. They first participated in the tournament in 2010 and by 2018, they had already reached semifinals. In fact, they have made it to the semifinals three times in last five editions.
Despite making two semifinals before the current one, Afghanistan youngsters have not been able to win any of them. In their maiden semifinal in 2018, they lost to Australia and in their second attempt four years later, they lost to England.
