Any faint hopes of having India captain Shubman Gill ready for the do-or-die Test against South Africa in Guwahati are over as an explosive report claims that the batter has been asked not to take any risk. With Gill travelling to Guwahati with the team, there were hopes that he would be playing in the second and final Test.
India lost the first Test by 30 runs at Eden Gardens after Gill suffered a neck injury in the first innings. He was ruled out of the second innings, as India failed to chase down 124, getting bowled out for 93 on a dust bowl.
Having suffered a neck injury while playing a sweep shot, Gill was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata, where he stayed for a night. As per reports, he was also wearing a neck collar to recover from neck spasms.

On Wednesday, the videos of him travelling to Guwahati had gone viral, but a report in NDTV claims that Gill would not be playing the second Test between India and South Africa. Reportedly, Gill was “desperate to play,” but BCCI’s medical team has asked not to take the risk and aggravate his injury.
Rishabh Pant will be captaining India in the second Test in Gill’s absence.

Also, a report in the news agency PTI claims that Gill may take around 10 days to recover. Which means he may not also feature in the ODIs, which start on 30 November. BCCI selectors giving a rest to Gill in ODIs would not be a big surprise, and he can straightaway make a comeback in the T20Is.
The BCCI would also need to name a stand-in captain. With vice-captain Shreyas Iyer recovering from the spleen injury he suffered in Australia, the captaincy duty may go to KL Rahul or Axar Patel.
